ABOUT AU GOSPEL CHOIR
Welcome to the American University Gospel Choir! We are a vibrant group of individuals from the wider AU community who are passionate about spreading the message of love, hope, and faith through the powerful medium of gospel music. Our choir has a rich history rooted in the traditions of gospel music, and we are dedicated to uplifting and inspiring our community through soul-stirring performances and heartfelt musical expressions.
OUR MISSION
At AU Gospel Choir, we are dedicated to fostering a spiritual environment through music, fellowship, and worship. Our goal is to share the message of Jesus Christ via Gospel music throughout the American University campus and the greater DC area. We strive to create an inclusive and uplifting space where individuals from all walks of life can come together to experience the joy and healing that gospel music brings. Through our music, we aim to foster a sense of unity, hope, and spiritual connection within our community.

Our History: Spreading Joy Through Music
The American University Gospel Choir has existed on the AU campus for more than three decades. In 1976, Valerie Yarborough and students Linda Jackson, Sheryl Taylor, Steven Wright, and Star Jones had a burning desire to sing gospel music and ring out shouts of praise. Under the spiritual guidance and advising of Rev. Clarence Cross, the choir quickly began to grow with students from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. Gospel spring revivals were organized and brought in preachers from all across the eastern seaboard. At these revivals, choirs from all over the city came and gave witness to the old time gospel songs and revival styles.
The choir’s theme is derived from Psalms 150: 6 —
“Let everything that hath breath praise ye the Lord…”. We ask all to pray that we continue to uplift the name of the Lord to all who will listen.
